October 21-31st:

Reading: This week we are learning about homophones/homonyms and how to make connections from a book we are reading to our life, the world, or another book we have read. Next week we are going learn about fact and opinion and main idea.

Social Studies: The next couple of weeks the kids will learn about the government, why voting is important, and how the election process works.

Math: The next two weeks we are subtracting 2 and 3-digit numbers in word problems and deciding if our answer is reasonable. The children will be tested over addition and subtraction next week.

Word Study: It is very important that your child is studying their spelling and class vocabulary words at home each night. This week the children are memorizing the vocabulary words that they are hearing in each subject. Next week our spelling words will cover past and present tense verbs.

Writing: This week the students are learning more about nouns and how to use them correctly in sentences. They will have a nouns test next week. Next week we will learn more about verbs.

October 6-17th:

Reading: This week we are learning about story elements (characters, plot, setting, problem & solution). Next week we are going to learn how to use context clues to figure out the meaning of words.

Science: The children will have a systems test this Friday. We will review for the test in class. This week and next your child is learning about force, motion & gravity and how forces shape the land.

Math: This week we are learning how to add 2 & 3-digit numbers. Next week we will begin subtracting 2 and 3-digit numbers.

Word Study: It is very important that your child is studying their spelling and class vocabulary words at home each night, The children are having a difficult time on the vocabulary tests. They didn’t have to memorize definitions in 2nd grade so they need a lot of practice with this. Their vocabulary test will be this Friday. Next weeks spelling words will be plural nouns.

Writing: The children are learning the writing process using the ideas and organization traits. Next week the children will learn what words need to be capitalized and we are continuing to work on how to write complete sentences.
